Background

SMU was established in 2014 as a comprehensive health sciences university and conducts its academic activities within the area of jurisdiction of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng Province, in South Africa’s economic heartland. It is named after Sefako Mapogo Mokgatho (1861-1951), an educationalist, journalist and politician, who pioneered the establishment of several labour and liberation movements in South Africa. The university occupies the academic and student residence facilities of the former MEDUNSA and uses the adjacent Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and various other facilities , in other provinces, as clinical training platforms.
