SMART APPLICATIONS FUND INFO PACK

For the 2026 District Career Expo Exhibitors, Sponsors and Stakeholders Presented by UniAppSA in collaboration with the North West Department of Education-Ngaka Modiri Molema District

INTRODUCTION

The 2026 District Career Expo, hosted in April 2026, provides a platform to connect learners, institutions, and development partners across the
district. As part of our mission to ensure that every matriculant has equitable access to post-school opportunities, UniAppSA introduces the
SMARTApplications Fund — a social-impact initiative that bridges the financial gap preventing learners from applying to tertiary institutions.

WHAT IS THE SMARTAPPLICATIONS FUND?

The SMARTApplications Fund is an innovative, transparent mechanism that ensures no matriculant is left behind due to inability to pay application fees.

While many South African institutions require application fees, there are 10 universities and all TVET colleges that do not — these are prioritized first to maximize reach and impact

The Fund assists learners with applications processing fees, enabling at least two applications per learner.first to maximize reach and impact

Each learner’s data is managed through UniAppSA’s SMARTApplications platform, which automates, tracks, and reports every step — from funding allocation to application outcome.

SPONSORSHIP MODEL: R75 PER LEARNER

Each contribution of R75 per learner allows a sponsor to directly impact the life of a matriculant by funding their university or college
applications. Each learner funded is tagged with a unique sponsorship ID in the UniAppSA system for transparent reporting

“The R75 covers administrative, processing, and verification costs to ensure that each learner’s application is successfully submitted and tracked”

Choose criteria for the type of learner(s) they wish to fund (e.g., by field of study, gender, performance, district, or background).

Receive impact and progress reports showing where their funding went and how it helped learners.

Sponsor individually or at scale, with measurable impact and branding opportunities in reports and digital recognition materials.

WHY THE SMARTAPPLICATIONS FUND MATTER

Bridges Access: Many learners miss opportunities simply because they can’t afford application fees.

Maximizes Reach: By prioritizing fee-free institutions first, the Fund ensures each learner makes the most of their opportunity.

Provides Measurable Impact: Transparent reporting ensures every rand is traceable and accounted for.

Creates Shared Value: Sponsors become direct contributors to youth empowerment and equitable access to higher education.

HOW IT WORKS

Learner Registration: Learners register on UniAppSA via their schools or the Expo.

Screening & Matching: SMARTApplications identifies eligible learners based on available sponsor criteria.

Funding Allocation: Sponsors contribute funds (R75 per learner) into the SMARTApplications Fund.

Application Processing: UniAppSA assists learners with up to two tertiary applications each.
